Pics From Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, & Hong Kong circa 1974

Since joining Entrecard the end of October (which introduced me to many excellent blogs and also increased my readership as well, however I've decided to cancel my membership), I've noticed there are many blogs from the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, & Hong Kong. These blogs have been fun for me to read because my parents lived in that area before I was born.

My mom was 19 and my dad 21 when they got married on August 26, 1970. My father graduated from college in December and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. My parents moved from Missouri to Pensacola, Florida while my dad attended Navy Flight School and became a naval aviator (helicopter pilot). For the next several years he and my mother moved all over with the Marine Corps, including North Carolina, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and my dad lived in the Philippines for an entire year (1974) while he was technically stationed aboard an aircraft carrier and set off the coast of Cambodia periodically.

In 1975, my dad completed his tour with the Marine Corps. (But, he stayed on their reserve list until 1980 when he joined the Iowa Army National Guard. He retired on March 26, 1996 with a Brevet Commission of Colonel.)

I wasn't born until 1979, but I grew up hearing my parents talk about these countries and, since they divorced in 1984, I have been the owner of their pictures and therefore looked at them a lot over the years, so I've always felt a connection to these places! :-)Subic Bay, Philippines

Thanks for Andrea for posting this. I believe that when your parents lived in Philippines, they really had many fun memories. I appreciate that an American woman posted the about our country and not to mention, the lovely and historical photos that you have included. It just me recall the history of Philippines. How the Americans help our people.
