He's Talking!

This was originally written on Wednesday, June 17, 2009:

Logan has started talking!!! Or atleast, today he said his first word on demand!I've been waiting to count his first word until he actually said it on purpose - meaning, at appropriate times and on demand - so I haven't counted the standard "mama" or "dadda" until he says it TO us, trying to get our attention.

So what was the word?

"Uh-Oh!"

Totally not what I would have expected, haha. But he was eating in his high chair and he pulled his bib down and threw it on the ground. I said, "Uh-oh" and gave him the bib back. He threw it down again and I said "Uh-oh" again - and then he said it, too! As I mentioned awhile back, there have been times I wonder if he's saying dog, and even recently can't tell if it's a coincidence or not that he does babble "dadda" when Joe comes home - but since I haven't been able to get him to repeat these words when I ask him, I thought maybe this would be the same thing. Nope! When I asked him to say "uh-oh" again - he did! And the next time. And the next time. And the next time! When Joe came home later he said it to Logan and Logan did it with him, too. It's so cute - one day before his 14 month birthday! :) (According to babycenter.com, most babies start saying words on demand/true communication between 13 & 18 months; then sentences between 18 & 24 months.)

It will be fun to see what other words he starts picking up and saying on his own now that a switch has been turned in his brain, haha! I'm ready - even though I've tried off and on since 9 months old to teach him sign language, he has refused to learn. Just as, he can pretty much mimick anything - however most things he never does on command again after a few times; it's like he learns something and then gets bored and wants to move on! (I'm not sure what that means about his personality. . . He doesn't seem to thrive on praise & attention like I thought all kids his age.) A few things he'll do most every time (like a high five, wave, "so big," "where's your nose?") but mainly he has taught me HIS sign language (when he puts his hand in his mouth I know he's hungry). However, he does seem proud that he keeps saying uh-oh. . .so let the talking begin! :)

P.S. On another subject, in my post The Weaner, (a couple of months ago), I asked for prayers for a girl who went to my high school (here is her blog) because her baby, Micah, was diagnosed with lung cancer (it was found when he was admitted to the hospital for RSV in February). Good news: 1) The cancer was found to be stage 1 (which meant it was not in any other part of his body). 2) The entire mass in his lung was removed, the surgery 100% successful. They were told that the RSV saved his life. Had he not gotten it, they would not have known he had cancer and would not have caught it in time. But, they still need your prayers. It is thought that the reason for the cancer is because he has central congenital hypoventilation syndrome which is causing him to desat while sleeping and also poor swallowing abilities and silent reflux. Having this most often leads to SIDS babies - so another miracle that he got RSV because they wouldn't have known otherwise, but now he's on a monitor while sleeping and receiving supplemental O2 through a nasal cannula. They are still testing him to find out what needs to be done so as to overcome the CCHS and will be going to Chicago to be studied by experts. His last sleep study showed he is improving so praise God!

Yay Logan!:D Lucas' first word was Daddy.. He said it a few weeks ago, while holding up my hubby's shoes and while he was looking at me and so I know he meant it, but I haven't told my hubby cause he is so going to gloat!:D He hasn't said it to him directly though.. :D Chakai's first word was Daddy too, and I don't know why, considering the fact that I am the one they're with the whole day, it seems unfair somehow.. I'm hoping he'll say Mommy or mama or mom in front of B first then I can tell him that's his first word.. :P

I feel for your friend! and I am glad that her baby is doing well too, I will pray for them and I hope that everything will turn out okay..

Go Logan, GO! That's really wonderful!! I'm sure that's already the start, so expect more words from him...it really is exciting, isn't it?

Daniel's first word aside from (Daddy and Mommy) is actually "bye bye" when he was barely 11 months...And at 13 months, he started uttering alot more words like hi, "loo" for hello, "no no" for no, "mik" for milk, and "bata" for bottle.. It's really cute listening to him how he learns how to talk...As much as possible, I always try to talk to him even when I'm changing his diapers, and his Daddy and I always read books to him so he'll learn and understand more words... And now that he'll soon be 17 months, he's already very talkative, he knows alot of ABC's and numbers 1-10 repeating after me...:)

I'm sorry about your friend...She and her baby will be in my prayers.

Congratulations to Logan for reaching that milestone. Children can start talking earlier than that and some even later.

My kids were all early talkers. My oldest began talking when she was about 7 mos, middle child 8 mos and my little boy who turns two tomorrow began talking when he was 5 mos. Yes he was actually using words that we could understand not just baby babble. But he is a gifted child and scares me every day.

All kids are different. It sounds like Logan is on the right track! Just keep reading to him every day and sing lots of songs with him and you will see that vocabulary grow rather quickly. It is amazing how fast those little brains learn.
